I live in Sydney Australia, and I started thinking this morning “What portion of the world’s population has summer in December – Feb?”. I thought I would do a quick Google to find out, but I couldn’t find the answer anywhere. So I set about working it out. Here is the answer.
I found this resource that provides the global population by 1 degree squares on the map. Ie they drew a map of the world with 360 vertical lines and 360 horizontal lines making 360×360 squarish boxes (total 129,600 boxes). They then plotted total population living in each box (1995 Census). I discarded the longitude data and analysed the Latitude data only.
Here is the summary
|Above Tropic of Cancer||4,167,931,473||79.2%||Northen Seasons|
|Tropic of Cancer to Equator||488,575,541||9.3%||Tropics|
|Equator to Tropic of Capricorn||305,846,667||5.8%||Tropics|
|Below Tropic of Capricorn||300,874,872||5.7%||Southern Seasons|
|Population 1995 Census||5,263,228,552||100.0%|
So the answer is, only 5.7% of the world’s population enjoys summer from Dec – Feb each year. 79.2% have summer in Jun-Aug, and 15.1% live in the tropics.
